Jeff and DeAnn Harris, Co-Founders of The Family Legacy Forum are high school sweethearts who married young and started their family early. Jeff attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater Virginia, and DeAnn attended Virginia Commonwealth University.
By the time they were 25 years old they had three young daughters and were struggling financially to survive. Then, quite unexpectedly, the seeds were sown at a Christmas party for an amazing future. Jeff met a young stockbroker who 201Crecruited201D him into the financial services industry.
Working from home, with no salary or benefits was extremely difficult, but with DeAnn's encouragement they managed to scrape by. They ultimately opened their own investment practice in Harrisonburg, VA. Over time the business grew bigger than they ever imagined, and they knew they needed to plan for their girls in case anything unexpected happened to them. So they met with a well-respected estate attorney and he drafted a number of traditional legal documents.
Avoiding Estate Taxes
Their attorney created a brilliant plan utilizing strategies to virtually eliminate estate tax liability, and to ensure the smooth transfer of their business and personal assets. But as pleased as they were with their estate plan they still had a nagging feeling that something important was missing. “I knew our attorney had done a great job”, said Jeff, “But during my career I’d witnessed the problems inherited wealth can create for families. Sometimes, the money destroys them.” He said.
That's when the idea for The Family Legacy Forum began to germinate.

Jeff and DeAnn didn't want their children, grandchildren and future generations of their family to be negatively impacted by the financial success they had enjoyed. They also wanted to have a process in place that would pass on their values, family heritage and work ethic after they were gone. "We didn't want our success to result in a broken, fractured family suffering from Affluenza. We had seen way too much of that and knew there had to be a better way," said DeAnn.
So they embarked on a lengthy three-year journey, reading books, articles, attending workshops all over the country, meeting with consultants, family counselors and clergy to map out a strategy they felt confidant would accomplish their goal. As they talked to friends and associates they realized every one of them knew a family that had been devastated by wealth, especially inherited wealth.
They determined to share what they had learned with other families that wanted to unify and preserve their values and heritage as well. In the fall of 2005 they partnered with The Heritage InstituteTM to benefit from their years of experience helping thousands of families use a proven process to preserve and protect the family. "When we learned about The Heritage Institute and their Heritage ProcessTM we decided it made no sense to try to reinvent the wheel", said Jeff.

Jeff and DeAnn utilize the proven Heritage Process to help families "Self-Discover" their unique heritage, core values and positive life experience. The result is a Family Vision Statement which serves as a powerful tool to unify and preserve current and future generations with a common vision and purpose. "Our goal is to help families avoid the dread disease of Affluenza which can turn inherited wealth into a family curse instead of a blessing", says DeAnn.
They work together as a team bringing their unique perspectives, skills and talents to bear for their clients. They are the parents of three beautiful daughters and recently became grandparents. In addition to working with the Heritage Institute they serve the business community as volunteer chaplains with the International Fellowship of Chaplains.
Jeff is an instrument rated private pilot and a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic. He's also an accomplished Chef having won the Slo Smokin backyard Rib cook-off in Rock Hill, SC in 2005. DeAnn enjoys reading, fitness, hiking and their new grandson. They attend Steele Creek Church in Charlotte, NC. Prior to moving to their home in South Carolina they attended Grace Covenant Church in Harrisonburg, VA where Jeff served as an Elder and DeAnn was very active with the prayer counseling team. Jeff is the author of Retire Rich and Happy: 12 Secrets to Retirement Success. The book has been featured prominently in numerous publications across the country and Jeff is often invited to speak on the ideas in the book, as well as his work with The Family Legacy Forum.

Our logo is the Sea Grape Tree and you may have noticed it at the top of our web site pages. Why Sea Grape trees? Our Co-Founder, Jeff Harris, took the picture at the northern tip of Long Island in the Bahamas while his family was vacationing together several years ago. Sea Grape trees live in tropical and semi-tropical environments. They endure occasional storms that threaten to destroy them. The key to the trees survival is their flexibility, deep root system, and resilient nature. In addition, the trees produce fruit that can be eaten or made into a delicious jelly or wine. And the bark and roots have medicinal qualities.
Its deep green leaves add beauty and shade, which benefit a variety of wildlife. The trees enjoy a long life span and new generations of Sea Grape trees spring from the parent trees. These trees thrive in an often-harsh environment and prosper in spite of adversity.
So what can we learn from these trees?
First, every family will face adversity. Wealth and material blessings will not insulate any family from the harsh environment of life. Storms will come and threaten to destroy the family. Knowing this, we can prepare in advance to weather the storms and hopefully, grow stronger from having successfully endured them.
Like the Sea Grape Tree, families must have a deep root system to survive and thrive. Creating a Family Vision Statement through The Heritage Institute's Guided Discovery Process is the key to building family unity and cohesiveness. When a Vision Statement is properly presented to ones family members, and they discover the benefits and values it holds for them, the family root system is dramatically strengthened.
A Family Council adds additional resilience as common values and goals brings clarity, focus and direction to family members. Finally, Family Retreats provide an environment of fun, laughter and learning. It's a unique opportunity for the family's heritage, values and work ethic to be passed on and caught by new generations.

It symbolizes resilience in the face of adversity, deep anchoring roots that hold shifting sand in place, nurture, healing, beauty and shelter. In short, the attributes of a healthy, thriving family with a bright future and an amazing destiny!

Dear Peter,

Your Heritage advisor will help you by asking a series of questions designed to enable you to focus on your positive family heritage. These are the positive attributes that have helped you enjoy the success you have today.
For instance, you may be asked to describe the person who was most influential in your life when you were in high school? It may be a parent, coach, teacher, neighbor or relative? Then you'll be asked why you chose that person? What was it about them and their character that makes them stand out? Your Heritage advisor has extensive training to help you follow the positive threads of your life.
You may be surprised to discover that the people you admired most in life have had a tremendous impact on you. Many of the things you admire about that person have been imbedded in your actions and attitudes. Guided Discovery brings this out so these positive attributes can be recorded and passed on to future generations.
It's actually quite enjoyable, and very affirming! There may be instances when negative memories arise. Of course every family has some degree of dysfunction, and the Guided Discovery Process is not designed to delve into these areas. The idea is to stay positively focused. In the event you ever feel uncomfortable for any reason with a question, simply ask to skip it.

Once you've completed your Guided Discovery interview, your Heritage Advisor will take the audiotapes and have them transcribed for you. This will give you a written document containing the raw material for the creation of your Family Vision Statement.
The Family Vision Statement will serve as a Guiding Light for children, grandchildren and future generations to understand their unique family Heritage and to positively influence them to live fulfilling, meaningful lives of significance. However, no matter how articulate your Vision Statement may be, it can't do its job if it isn't properly presented to family members.

Suck off the bone Ribs
Here's my award winning BBQ rib recipe.
1.) Get some good pork ribs.
2.) Put in a big roasting pan and just barely cover with water.
3.) Cook at 375 degrees for 2 hours, then let cool.
4.) Pour olive oil on the cooked ribs and sprinkle with a good rib rub.
5.) Cover and let sit in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.
6.) Start your charcoal grill, throw in hickory chips once it's going good.
7.) Sear the ribs on both sides, 5 to 7 minutes per side.
8.) Cover ribs with your favorite BBQ sauce and smoke for about 30-45 minutes.
9.) Check every five minutes so they don't burn up, turn as needed.
Enjoy with baked beans, cole slaw, rolls, sweet tea, and pecan pie!

Q.) This sounds good, but I've already done my estate planning. Wouldn't this be overkill?
A.) Traditional Estate Planning focuses on estate tax savings, but does nothing to help your family unify and preserve your heritage, core-values and work ethic. The Heritage Process complements your current estate documents and brings them to life by ensuring your family is the key focus of the planning.
Q.) My spouse and I have done a good job of raising our children and instilling our values in them. Why would we want to use this process?
A.) Most of the families we work with have done a good job of raising their children. The value of The Heritage Process is that it captures the essence of your positive family heritage, core-values and work ethic so it can be preserved and passed on to future generations. As you age your influence will ultimately begin to wane. New son or daughter-in-laws may not embrace the same values you hold dear that have proven so beneficial for your family. The Heritage Process will ensure your values live on in future generations.
Q.) The fee seems high relative to what I paid to have my will and trust drafted. How can you justify your fee?
A.) This isn't about drafting legal documents, but determining what's most important to you and your family. Then creating a process to pass on those values to bless current and future generations. Q. Isn't this only for couples with children?
A. No. It's for anyone who wants to make a positive impact on, and leave a powerful legacy to the people and future generations that are important to them. This could be neices, nephews, brothers, sisters, friends or virtually anyone. Leaving them money is nice. But giving them the positive life skills, work ethic, and values that have served you well is worth much more than money. Long after the money has been spent and forgotten your positive legacy can be guiding those you care most about to live fulfilling, meaningful lives of significance.
Q. How long does it take to do this? I'm very busy and have important commitments so can we do this in my spare time?
A. How long it takes to complete is pretty much up to you. It's possible you could complete the Guided Discovery/Vision Statement in 30 days or less. However, you can't rush this process. It takes time to follow the positive threads of your life to distill the values, life experience and work ethic that has served you so well. You don't see your physician, attorney or CPA only when you have "spare time". Likewise, this is an extremely important step in your life that will impact the generations to come. You should only consider moving forward with this process if you are willing to make it a priority.
Q. My children won't listen to me. I'm afraid if I moved forward with this it would all be in vain and I would have wasted my time and money?
A. We hear this all the time. Most of the families we've worked with have had various levels of difficulty communicating. Your Heritage advisor is a key player in making this work for you because they've received specialized training in dealing with this very issue. He/she will help your children/grandchildren "self-discover" the benefits they will enjoy personally by embracing the process. Time and again The Heritage Process has proven it's ability to "break through" the walls that naturally occur in families.
